Norm Cox Memorial trophy and the event has a long standing tradition in the Club and presents a fantastic opportunity for the Power Boaties and the Yachties to get together on the water. It’s a great chance to share some of the competitive spirit enjoyed by each section and understand the differences in sailing and power yacht competition with their own distinctive excitement and challenges coming to the fore.
The “Yimbala” is conducted in the morning commencing at 10.00am. This is the power section side of the day where the power boaties hand over their steering wheels to a yachty to take part in a time trial. The power boat is put through a number of timed check points losing a point for each second it is either early or late at each point. The winner of this event is the boat with the least number of points at the end of trial. The owner of the Power Boat will normally navigate so is close on hand to provide guidance and camaraderie.
The start time for each nominated power yacht together with its name of craft, yacht skipper and competition number gets posted on the notice board in the foyer of the main clubhouse at least 24 hours before the scheduled start time at 1000 hrs.
The “Eun-Na-Mara” is conducted in the afternoon commencing at 1.30pm. This is the sailing side of the day where the yachties hand over their helms to a power boat owner to take part in a sailing event. The yacht sails a course starting at the Club’s start box and navigates its way around a number of fixed marks on the river before finishing at the Club’s Box. Each yacht is provided with a handicap in line with its design rating with the winner of the event being the boat with the best corrected time. Yachts are sailed with a jib and main only, so no scary spinnakers to worry about. The owner of the yacht will provide his crew so again assistance is close at hand to provide guidance and camaraderie.
The “Norm Cox” trophy is awarded to the team after each vessels point scores are added together with their partner vessel. The boat with the lowest aggregate score across the two events is declared the winner.
